What Is the Health Insurance Marketplace?
It’s where people can shop for, learn about, and buy Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance, either in person, online, or by phone. In North Carolina, the Health Insurance Marketplace is run by the federal government, though many states run their own instead.
To enroll for insurance through the Marketplace, visit HealthCare.Gov, and select “North Carolina” from the menu.
The Marketplace, also often called the Exchange, is mainly for people who:
-
- Don’t have insurance
- Aren’t insured by an employer
- Aren’t included in their spouse’s employer insurance
- Don’t have Medicare
- Have pre-existing conditions and may have had trouble getting insurance before
- Have private insurance, but want to look at other options
- Own a small business
